After having success training top kickers like Gary Wunderlich (Ole Miss), Aaron Medley (Tennessee) and many other BCS level kicking specialists, I have found some common traits between success and failure. I have never been opposed to my kickers playing soccer in the Spring but I can tell a HUGE difference when someone has neglected developing themselves physically. The Mr. Football Kicker of the Year award goes to the best kicker in the state of Tennessee regardless of classification. It is voted on by sportswriters from across the state. I think that they did a great job with the 3 finalists this year. Obviously there are always some omissions but there are some strong candidates this year in Corey Fatony (Franklin HS), Laszlo Toser (Ooltewah HS) and Thomas Garrison (Columbia Academy). Many times kickers ask me how they can become better in the offseason. There are many ways that you can improve but one of the most important aspects is the mental game. I got a Master's degree in Sport Psychology at the University of Tennessee and I firmly believe that my experiences with the mental game were the reason I was a Freshman All American and All SEC during my senior season.
